Hong Leong Yamaha Motor yesterday unveiled the much-anticipated, all-new high-performance Yamaha Y16ZR, the most powerful 155cc motorcycle in its class.

“The All-New Yamaha Y16ZR comes with a string of new special features and stays true to Yamaha’s DNA which is synonymous to Performance, Style and Innovation” said Dato’ Jim Khor, Group Managing Director of Hong Leong Industries Berhad at the launch.

“We take pride in our ability to continue to meet the demands of our customers and are certain that the Y16ZR is able to do this with. It is different in all aspects beginning with its new drivetrain to its design and mechanical components” he added.

The motoring fraternity and media were treated to an exclusive media launch to introduce this all-new model where a test ride session was conducted at the Sepang International Circuit on 18th March 2021.

The Y 16 ZR handles pretty well with good weight distribution. Power and torque is surprisingly better than the MT25. Although having a 2-pot caliper with a 245 mm front disc for the front brakes, I personally felt the stopping power can be improve.

Perfectly tailored for performance, comfort and handling

Designed for enjoyable city riding, the Y16ZR features a cutting edge, all new and powerful liquid-cooled 4-stroke, 4-valve, SOHC 155cc engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). This engine is linked to a new 6-speed gearbox that produces different ignition mapping for each gear, capable of pushing 17.7 hp@9,500 rpm and a top torque of 14.4 Nm @ 8,000 rpm.

As in many of Yamaha’s latest models, the Y16ZR model also comes with the Assist & Slipper Clutch system that helps reduce the clutch level load, allowing the ease of gear changing during downshifting. For a more comfortable ride, the Clutch Lever Handle is designed 10mm shorter than that of the Yamaha Y15ZR, giving you a much easier grip when changing gears.

On the handling front, the Y16ZR comes with a new strong and rigid but lightweight frame featuring a new Y-shaped reinforcement collar and a 4.5mm thicker engine mount to keep your ride sturdy and optimised for enhanced cornering performance especially at high speeds.

In tandem with the fuel-efficient engine, the Y16ZR’s new 5.4 – litre fuel tank will provide you with a further ride, capable of reaching a maximum range of 256 km, depending on your style of riding while onboard comfort is provided by a new separate-style, staggered slip-resistant seat that is ergonomically shaped to follow the contour of riding position.

Leader in Style and Innovation in Design

First impression count, and the Yamaha Y16ZR leads in style and innovation. Its racing-inspired LED high and low beam headlights provide a distinctive sporty front- end look where the low beam headlamps are placed on the handlebar while the high beams are integrated onto the lower body with the position lights. The new taillight is stylish, narrower, longer and features an R-DNA styled LED unit which blends perfectly to the contours of the body.

As you prepare for your ride, you’ll be greeted by the compact, negative-faced LCD multi-function digital panel that features the speedometer, tachometer, gear indicator, VVA indicator, etc. providing that correct visual contrast for optimum legibility.

The Y16ZR engine can be started with just a simple twist of a knob, eliminating the need to insert a key. This is a first-in-class smart key system that also features a call back function to determine the bike’s position. It also comes equipped with an immobilizer as a theft deterrent while a new quick engine cut-off switch is made available and incorporated at the main switch panel for emergency use.

As a nod to the mobile lifestyles of most Malaysians, to facilitate the charging of your smart devices, a 12V DC socket with a maximum capacity of 1.0A is also provided.
