There is a moment on every expedition when the engines fall silent. The convoy stops, the rainforest takes over, and people who were strangers only days before are passing plates of food, trading stories and reaching out a hand to pull one another up a riverbank. That moment is what the Malayan Xpedition was built for, and this year, organised by By The Billions (BTB), it returned bigger in spirit than ever before.
Carrying its community from the Klang Valley into the rainforests of Pahang and out to the shores of Cherating, the recently concluded Malayan Xpedition 2026 was never a race, and it was far from a competition. It was a journey into hidden Malaysia: villages, rivers and forest trails most Malaysians would never think to visit. Kampung Kuala Sat, where the rainforest chapter begins, is accessible by all modes of transport, yet ask around and few have ever set foot there. This is the Malaysia the expedition went looking for, and it is where it all starts.
This year, the call of hidden Malaysia travelled further than ever. Explorers from New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Belgium and the Netherlands joined participants from every corner of Malaysia, arriving as visitors and leaving as part of the family. Different accents, different homes, one truly Malaysian experience.
Where It Began: The Adventure Festival Comes Home to the Klang Valley
For the first time, BTB brought its Adventure Festival to the Klang Valley, setting up at PARC, Subang Jaya, a community venue that felt fitting for an afternoon about bringing people together. Families, first-time off-roaders and curious neighbours shared the same space, and the same sense of adventure.
From dragonboating and rock climbing to a creative therapy session and coffee tasting, the activities were endless, each one an invitation to slow down, try something new and meet someone you had not met before. TraxxFM kept the afternoon moving as MC and entertainment partner, while lucky draw giveaways of up to RM150,000 worth of items kept spirits high well into the evening.
GWM returned as Preferred Automotive Partner for a second consecutive year. Its steadfast commitment to BTB and the community it serves shows, year after year, what it means to Go With More. Grantt Lubricants, also in its second year as Lubricant Partner, was instrumental in the community’s preparations, from the health of participants’ vehicles to carrying the spirit of adventure further through national hero Johan “Jojo” Ghazali of ONE Championship, who attended the festival to meet with fans.
BTB closed the night with a moment that captured what this community believes in: the giveaway of a 29-year-old Toyota Land Cruiser Prado nicknamed “MX90”, refurbished with care through expert partners Wing Hing Body and Paint and HY Auto Trading and handed on to a new owner. The message was simple. Adventure has never been reserved for whoever owns the latest model on the showroom floor. It belongs to anyone with good company beside them, a dependable vehicle that has been looked after, and the curiosity to see what lies beyond the next bend. Some of the greatest journeys begin with any old truck, a full tank and the courage to go.
Into the Rainforest: Two Paths, One Journey
From the festival, the Xpedition set off into the interior. Participants chose the journey that suited them:
- The Adventure Route – a unique, immersive and more challenging experience for those ready to go deeper into the forest with a more technical aproach.
- The Explorer Route – a lighter off-road experience, ideal for new 4×4 drivers, families and anyone taking their first steps off the tarmac.
Whichever path they took, it ultimately led to the same place: a shared campsite, a shared campfire and a shared ending.
Moments That Stayed
Deep into the Hulu Tembeling region, the expedition entered a rainforest that has stood for more than 130 million years. As part of the greater Taman Negara landscape, it is regarded as one of the oldest tropical rainforests on Earth, far older than the Amazon. Few people ever see it from the inside. It is a place that reveals itself only to those willing to leave the paved road behind and go looking for it.
The days were defined not by the terrain, but by what happened in between. A 9km river trek saw participants wading through cold water and over mossy stone, encouraging one another step by step until the forest opened up around them. Cooking competitions turned campsites into open kitchens, with friendly rivalry giving way to shared tasting plates and borrowed recipes.
The most memorable evening fell on Malaysia Day. Far from any city celebration, the camp marked the nation’s birthday deep inside one of its oldest rainforests, with a shared potluck supported by MeatXpert. This year’s national theme, Kesejahteraan Dinikmati (Shared Prosperity), came to life in the simplest way: everyone brought something to the table, and everyone left with a full plate. Malaysians and friends from around the world ate together as one family, only people sharing what they had under the canopy of the land that brought them together.
Leaving the Forest Better Than We Found It
An expedition through hidden Malaysia comes with a responsibility to the places and people who make it possible. This year, the Malayan Xpedition gave back to the communities and the land that welcomed it in:
- Native hardwood and keystone fig trees were planted along the Sungai Kerum in collaboration with Jabatan Perhutanan Daerah Jerantut, on wild trails far from any established settlement, making the route itself part of the journey’s contribution to the forest.
- Hardware materials were contributed to Kampung Kuala Sat, supporting the village’s efforts to repair and improve its aging clean-water pipeline infrastructure.
- HeartSpace brought its mobile clinic to Kuala Sat, travelling with the expedition to offer free health checks and distribute wellness kits to the local villagers.
- Provisions and pre-loved clothing were brought in by participants and donated to the local community.
- The expedition’s stay was spent within Kuala Sat itself, through local accommodation, food and beverage, activities and supplies, so that its presence was felt in the community’s livelihood, not just its roads.
“Out there, nobody asked what you do or where you came from. We crossed the same rivers, cooked over the same fires and slept beneath the same ancient trees. The rainforest gave us something the city rarely does: time with each other. That is what the Malayan Xpedition is, the stories, the time, and the moments shared” said Ned Nazlan, Founder of By The Billions.
Bigger Than an Event: A Movement
Malaysia’s adventure and outdoor communities have long existed in different pockets: 4×4 clubs, campers, hikers, anglers, families and weekend explorers, each with their own trails and traditions. The Malayan Xpedition is becoming the place where these pockets meet. What began as a drive is growing into a movement, one that connects a fragmented community around something larger than any single vehicle, club or route: a shared love for this land and a commitment to exploring it responsibly, together.
For brands, media and everyday Malaysians alike, it offers something increasingly rare: a chance to be part of a story that is real, rooted in community and built to last.
Special Mention
BTB extends its heartfelt thanks to the partners whose support made the Adventure Festival and the Malayan Xpedition possible: BFGoodrich, ANBOT, Pedders Suspension & Brakes, Tough Dog, Victron Energy, Alpaka, MeatXperts, YETI, MONTANIC Camping Store, Red Springs, Nakawan, Firemaple and TraxxFM.
For By The Billions, the road does not end in Cherating. The stories, friendships and bonds formed this year now carry forward into the Malayan Xpedition 2027, and the invitation remains open to everyone who believes the best way to know Malaysia is to experience it, together.
