Maybach S 560
Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The luxury brand combines the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. Now the top model from Mercedes-Benz is even more refined. A new radiator grille, optional two-tone paintwork and new exclusive colour combinations in the interior ensure an even more majestic look.
A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. It celebrated its world premiere in the Vision Mercedes Maybach 6, the exclusive coupé study which thrilled connoisseurs and fans of the brand in 2016. The upgraded front with extensive chrome trim underscores the exceptional status of the Mercedes-Maybach. Also new is the Maybach logotype between the louvres of the radiator grille on the driver’s side.
The two-tone exterior paint finish is also a classic Mercedes-Maybach theme. In future there will be nine different colour combinations available on request. The double clear coat is available as a further new option for all dark colors.
It creates a brilliant surface finish with a piano lacquer effect and a special impression of depth. The second bodywork clear coat, including intermediate sanding, is intricately applied by hand in the Maybach Manufaktur by specially trained varnishers.
The exterior look of the top model is rounded off by a new luxury 20-inch multi-spoke wheel. There are also three exclusive 20-inch wheels to choose from for the Mercedes-Maybach, including the wheel with a 20-hole design familiar from the Mercedes-Maybach S Cabriolet.
Two new exclusive colour combinations are offered in the interior: armagnac brown/black and savanna beige/black. The black Maybach Exclusive nappa leather upholstery appointments can also be ordered with a choice of copper-, gold- or platinum-coloured contrasting topstitching. Also new in the range are trim inserts in designo flowing lines Magnolia wood.
With a length of 5462 mm and a wheelbase of 3365 mm, the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz model range exceeds the long-wheelbase S Class Saloon by 20 cm in both dimensions. Rear passengers benefit from this increased size, as well as from standard equipment that includes Executive seats on both left and right and other exclusive details such as innovative voice amplification. The luxurious rear of the S-Class already impresses with a generous amount of space. The wheelbase of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has been extended again by 20.7 cm and thus creates an unprecedented amount of space in the rear. Up to 12 motors per seat (when fully equipped) adjust the seats in a tailor-made manner to suit any body size. Access to the infotainment or telephony features is just as convenient.
The huge success of the Mercedes-Maybach speaks volumes: since the market launch of the Maybach in February 2015 over 25,000 Mercedes-Maybach S Class models have already been delivered to customers.
MAGIC BODY CONTROL with curve inclination function
Oriented towards driving dynamics, this suspension adjusts to surface undulations before the vehicle drives over them. To do this, MAGIC BODY CONTROL combines active suspension with continuously adjustable dampers and ROAD SURFACE SCAN. With the aid of a stereo camera, the carriageway surface ahead is scanned precisely to allow the damping of each individual wheel to be optimally adjusted in advance to the impending bumps. The curve inclination function enables the body of the vehicle to lean inwards by up to 2.65 degrees on bends. This significantly reduces the perceived lateral forces while increasing subjective driving pleasure, especially on country roads.
Knowing what lies ahead – ROAD SURFACE SCAN
The suspension is effectively able to compensate for body roll and pitching when moving off, cornering or braking. In combination with the innovative ROAD SURFACE SCAN, it is also possible to adapt the damping predictively for road bumps. ROAD SURFACE SCAN uses a stereo camera behind the windscreen, at the height of the inside rear-view mirror. The camera precisely scans for unevenness in the road ahead. On the basis of these images, the system is able to predict the oscillations. The resulting body movements can be effectively reduced by the suspension. The load on each individual wheel is increased or decreased in advance by the active hydraulics and the damper setting made harder or softer.
Night View Assist Plus – seeing more for safer driving at night
Only 20% of road traffic is at night-time, but 40% of all fatal accidents occur during this period. Night View Assist Plus enables drivers to detect pedestrians or larger animals sooner in the dark. They are clearly highlighted in the cockpit display. To do this the system illuminates the road ahead with two anti-dazzle infrared lamps. With the help of an infrared camera located behind the windscreen, the entire area within high-beam headlamp range is shown as a crystal-clear greyscale image. A thermal imaging camera in the radiator grille is able to give a precise warning by distinguishing between irrelevant objects such as traffic sign combinations or bushes and relevant objects such as pedestrians or large animals. The latter are highlighted in colour by small “photo mounts”. The spotlight function enables endangered pedestrians to be flashed at several times, so that the driver registers them even more quickly and the former recognise the danger. As standard the night view image only appears automatically when a hazardous situation is recognised.
Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system – innovative technology for a unique audio experience
Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system – innovative technology for a unique audio experience. The standard Frontbass system enables breath-taking bass performance, whereby the bodyshell structure is used as an exceptionally rigid, vibration-free and stable bass housing. If the optionally available Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system is also installed, the occupants can enhance their listening pleasure even further thanks to five selectable presets: with pure for high-fidelity, natural music reproduction, easy listening for relaxed, effect-reduced listening on long journeys, live with a decidedly punchy and crisp sound, surround for expansive all-round reproduction and 3D sound for impressive emphasis of the acoustics and atmosphere of special performance venues, such as opera houses or jazz cellars. Six sound sources in the roof liner enable the 3D sound to take on a realistic live-concert character. A total of 27 speakers specially designed for their respective tasks are used in the Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system. They all have their own drive/amplifier electronics, from the generously dimensioned subwoofer in the boot with 400 W output to the high-resolution annular tweeters. The tweeters in the front mirror triangle are fascinating design objects in their own right: When the sound system is switched on, they rotate out of the mirror triangle, they can also be used for visual effect with the ambience lighting. If desired, the amplifiers can supply the speakers with a total of 1590 watts to ensure high-fidelity music reproduction, including at extremely high levels. The combination of analogue and digital technology makes for a warm, rounded and rich sound, along with extremely high dynamics between quiet and loud passages of music.
Panoramic sliding sunroof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL – the roof with an open-air feeling
MAGIC SKY CONTROL creates an open-air feeling at the push of a button. The 2-section panoramic sliding sunroof changes from dark to transparent or vice versa within a few seconds. The transparency of the two sections of the roof can be changed independently for each section. In its tinted state, it substantially reduces heating-up of the vehicle interior. MAGIC SKY CONTROL is activated via a switch in the overhead control panel. When electrical voltage is applied, particles in the glass structure align themselves so that light can pass through the glass. The passengers enjoy a clear view of the sky and a particularly light and friendly atmosphere in the interior. The glass darkens when the voltage is switched off. The particles are distributed randomly and stop most of the light from passing through. This type of screening is far more effective than a roof with conventional tinted glass. This way, it is possible to reduce the interior temperature by up to 10 °C. As the roof is de-energised when the vehicle key is removed, it darkens automatically when the vehicle is parked, thus preventing the interior from heating up and making it difficult for prying eyes to see inside the vehicle.
Chauffeur package – more space in the rear
Thanks to additional fore/aft and height adjustment, the front passenger seat can be moved up to 77 mm further forward into the so-called Chauffeur position. This enables the passenger seated behind it to enjoy the journey even more. The noticeably larger legroom in the rear allows a more comfortable resting position. This is assisted by an electrically extending footrest on the front passenger side. The EASY ADJUST luxury head restraints included in the Chauffeur package offer driver and front passenger considerably more comfort and safety. The distance between the head and the head restraint is electrically adjustable, and automatically adapts to any seat adjustments, so as to maintain an optimal distance between the head and the head restraint. In addition, the side bolsters provide comfortable lateral support. On the front passenger side the EASY ADJUST luxury head restraint can be folded down or removed completely. In both cases the rear seat occupant behind it has improved visibility to the front.
ENERGIZING comfort control – perfectly matched programmes at the press of a button
ENERGIZING comfort control combines various in-vehicle comfort systems into precisely defined programmes for enhanced alertness and well-being during a journey. These support the driver in monotonous driving situations or produce a targeted sense of well-being. Included are climate control, fragrancing / ionisation, lighting mood, music/videos as well as massage function, heating and ventilation of the seats. The intelligent principle: one main function dominates, while other accompanying functions reinforce the desired effect of the programme (each programme lasts 10 minutes). The programme always includes, for example, an adapted lighting mood from the ambience lighting as well as special fragrancing / ionisation from the AIR BALANCE package.
The “Refresh” programme literally delivers fresh air for renewed energy on a long journey – a strong air flow from the THERMOTRONIC (Air Pulsation) produces the greatest effect. In addition to the energising effect of fragrancing, a key role is also played by ionisation from the AIR BALANCE package – the driver inside the vehicle experiences a climate like after a summer storm followed by rain: pure freshness. The programme is rounded off by activated seat ventilation.
If the driver or a passenger needs fresh energy for upcoming tasks, the “Vitality” programme comes to their assistance with activating music as the main theme. In addition, COMAND Online contains corresponding playlists with lively rhythms. Active instead of passive is the main theme of the “Training” programme, which provides animation with videos on a total of 9 exercises.
Three further programmes in conjunction with other optional extras are designed to specifically relax the driver – for this purpose, the armrests, steering wheel and seats are heated in the “Warmth” programme. And the “Joy” programme also delivers what it promises. The main theme here is a soothing massage programme.
Finally, ENERGIZING massage functions with pleasant effects based on the hot-stone principle are provided courtesy of the likewise 10-minute “Well-being” programme. The pleasant sensation is rounded off by seat heating.
In addition to fragrancing / ionisation, each of the six programmes also adapts the lighting mood. Thus, the ambient lighting automatically sets the following colours: blue-green (Refresh), red (Vitality), green-white (Training), orange-yellow (Warmth), yellow (Joy) and also lilac-rose (Well-being). These central climate/light functions are always activated for every seat. However, using COMAND Online it is also possible to individually select massage or seat climate control, for example for the driver’s seat or the right rear seat.
AIR BALANCE package – personal fragrance and clean, fresh air
The vehicle interior can be fragranced according to personal preferences with the AIR BALANCE package. It offers six high-quality interior fragrances to suit personal preference and mood. The fragrance can be easily changed by exchanging the fragrance flasks used in the generator in the glove compartment. The intensity and duration of the fragrancing are adjustable. The fragrance is discreet, given off gently and rapidly dissipated after switching off. The odour of the interior is not permanently changed, nor are the fragrance molecules deposited on fabric surfaces or clothing. Oxygen ionisation of the interior air is a further function of the AIR BALANCE package. Enriching the air with negatively charged oxygen ions has a refreshing effect. At the same time, certain viruses, bacteria and spores can be reduced. In addition, a filter system with two activated charcoal fine-particle filters cleans the outside air transported into the vehicle interior by the air conditioning system. While the particle filter system traps the dust, the layer of activated charcoal also reduces peak levels of gaseous emissions such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides or aromatic hydrocarbons until they are no longer perceived as unpleasant.
The interior air filters have an anti-allergenic effect and are an integral part of the ECARF-certified interior. The ECARF quality seal is awarded to products that are especially allergy-friendly.

Mercedes-Benz S 450
The new S-Class enters the market with comprehensive new features. Intelligent Drive takes another step towards autonomous driving. Further to this, the undisputed leader in the premium segment with regards to comfort and wellness sets new standards in the interior.
The top-of-the-range model of Mercedes-Benz takes another big step towards autonomous driving and elevates Intelligent Drive to the next level. Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts, for example (country-specific variations may occur in terms of the individual functions).
MULTIBEAM LED headlamps enable extremely quick and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the current traffic conditions. The ULTRA RANGE main beams produce the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beams remaining above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 metres.
The development work on the new S-Class was extremely extensive, with 6,500 new components. With a whole series of new features and functions, the S-Class remains the technological pioneer. The flagship from Mercedes-Benz was the best-selling luxury saloon in the world in 2016. Since 2013 the company has sold well over 300,000 saloons. Today there are six different S-Class body variants.
Three torches of light as an exclusive exterior design feature
Modern luxury in the new S-Class is manifest in maximum quality of materials and workmanship. Status and technological competence are now even more tangible. All models are fitted with a new radiator grille: The S 450 sports three twin louvres in chrome as well as vertical bars in a high-gloss black finish in the radiator grille.
In conjunction with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps (optional feature, details below), the S-Class features three distinctive torches of light as an exclusive design element. The front bumper with pronounced air intakes and sporty looks is also new.
The new LED lamps with crystal-look tail lamps stand out at the rear. They look like jewels and ensure a characteristic design day and night. A tail lamp light that shows when the vehicle is unlocked and locked, as well as three horizontal pairs of fibre optics are also new.
All models are fitted with a redesigned lower bumper section with integrated visible tailpipe trim. The tailpipes are framed by a chrome trim element, which spans the entire width of the vehicle.
Control and display concept with wide-screen cockpit and new generation of steering wheels
The interior of the new S-Class is characterised by the two new high-resolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a wide-screen cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.
Like the instrument cluster, this wide-screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver, as well as a central display above the centre console. Because the cockpit is fully digital, the driver can choose from three different display styles (“Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive“) and also configure the information and views relevant to them at will.
The new S-Class has touch-sensitive Touch Control buttons in the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.
The infotainment system can also be operated via the touchpad with controller in the centre console and by LINGUATRONIC voice control. Voice control has for the first time been extended to include vehicle functions. Voice commands can now also be used to control the air conditioning and seat heating / ventilation, interior lighting (ambience lighting, reading lights, lighting in the rear), fragrancing / ionisation, seat massage function and head-up display. Depending on language version and vehicle equipment, up to 450 individual voice commands are now possible. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with control elements directly on the steering wheel is another new feature.
Lighting atmosphere with 64 colours
As before, the interior lighting uses only long-lasting, energy-saving LED technology. With 64 colours, the optional extended ambience lighting offers a wealth of individual settings. It adds lighting highlights, for example, on the trim elements, the central display, the stowage facility at the front of the centre console, the handle recesses, the door pockets, in the front and rear footwells, on the overhead control panel, and on the tweeters when the vehicle is equipped with the Burmester® surround sound system.
In addition, the ambience lighting creates emotionally appealing contrasts and structures the interior into levels. 64 colours and ten colour worlds allow an avant-garde lighting display with spectacular colour changes.

S 560 Cabriolet.
As a member of the large and successful S-Class family, the cabriolet benefits from the same extensive innovations that have just been introduced on the saloon. These include new or functionally considerably extended driving assistance systems, the modern control and display concept with Widescreen Cockpit and new generation of steering wheels, integrated ENERGIZING comfort control and the latest infotainment generation. Exclusive to both of the two-door models and part of the standard equipment specification are innovative OLED tail lamps.
The further-developed design exudes even greater sportiness while showing off the high technical expertise. S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet feature front aprons with chrome-plated front splitter and voluminous air inlets. The dynamic looks are enhanced by restyled side skirts and chrome-plated twin tailpipe trims with a V12 look.
The AMG Line is also made more dynamic with new front and rear aprons. Especially striking at the front end are the large three-dimensional air inlets, which each include two chrome-plated fins.
Innovative OLED tail lamps as standard
Innovative OLED tail lamps are a new feature of the S-Class Coupé and S-Class Cabriolet. With this technology (organic light emitting diode), wafer-thin layers of organic materials are printed on a glass plate and made to illuminate. The total of 66 ultra-flat OLEDs act like floating elements inside the tail lamp; in addition, they emit a highly homogeneous light pattern in all directions and form a unique day and night design. Locking and unlocking the vehicle is additionally emphasised by an animated dynamic light sequence with subsequent dimming-up of the tail lights. Of course, the OLED tail lamps also employ the usual Mercedes-Benz multi-level technology with different levels of intensity for brake lamps and turn signal indicators depending on the driving condition and ambient brightness (day/night).
Two new wheels allow further individualisation of the vehicle in conjunction with the AMG Line. These are 50.8 cm (20-inch) AMG 10-spoke wheels including AMG wheel arch flares painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish (optional for AMG Line) or painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish (optional for AMG Line Plus).
Luxury lounge with Widescreen Cockpit and new generation of steering wheels.
A fresh interior look is guaranteed by three new trim lines (high-gloss brown burr walnut wood, satin-finish grey ash wood and flowing lines designo magnolia wood) as well as three new upholstery lines (designo Exclusive nappa leather AMG Line Plus porcelain / tizian red, designo Exclusive nappa leather porcelain / tizian red and designo Exclusive nappa leather AMG Line Plus Bengal red/black).
The interior of the new S-Class Cabriolet is characterised by the two new high-resolution and brilliant displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.
Like the instrument cluster, this Widescreen Cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver, as well as a central display above the centre console. The all-digital cockpit offers the three visually very different styles “Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive”. Depending on personal preference or matching the selected interior, the styles can be quickly changed from the instrument cluster and the central display. Alongside certain menu contents, such as trip data or consumption figures, the driver can now additionally view the navigation data or the ECO display in the instrument cluster. This helps the driver to make their driving style more efficient.
The S-Class Cabriolet has Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the functions of the instrument cluster and of the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with controls directly on the steering wheel is another new feature.
The infotainment system can also be operated via the touchpad with controller in the centre console and by LINGUATRONIC voice control. Voice control has for the first time been extended to include vehicle functions. Voice commands can now also be used to control the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lighting (ambient lighting, reading lights, lighting in the rear), fragrancing / ionisation, seat massage function and Head-up Display. Depending on language version and vehicle equipment, up to 450 individual voice commands are now possible.
The latest-generation COMAND Online offers fast 3D hard-disc navigation with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. Comprehensive information is displayed on the navigation map: in addition to real-time traffic density information it can e.g. include Car-to-X warning messages, the weather, filling stations including current fuel prices and free parking spaces.
ENERGIZING comfort control for greater well-being and alertness
ENERGIZING comfort control (optional extra) links various comfort systems in the vehicle together. It systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the panel heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. As a result, well-being and performance levels are enhanced.
Depending on the equipment level, up to six programs are available:
- Freshness
- Warmth
- Vitality
- Joy
- Comfort
- Training (three training modes – muscle relaxation, muscle activation and balance – each with several exercises)
The programs all run for ten minutes. They are visualised on the head unit with colour graphics, and backed by suitable music. Five songs are already stored in the program. The key function in the “Vitality” program, for example, is fast music with many beats per minute. The S-Class repertoire therefore features “Feelin’ Good” by Leon Riskin, for instance. If personal music selections are available, e.g. via the Media Interface, the system analyses them in the background and assigns them to a program based on the beats per minute (bpm). Individual functions of the programs can be deactivated.
ENERGIZING comfort control also incorporates ambient lighting, which is harmoniously tailored to each of the individual screen designs. With 64 colours, the optional extended ambient lighting offers a wealth of individual settings. The light stages the interior like a work of art by composing colour worlds from different colours.
New infotainment systems and wireless charging of smartphones
All S-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation infotainment system COMAND Online, starting a new era in digitisation and connectivity. Near Field Communication transforms the smartphone into a digital vehicle key.
With the Smartphone Integration package, Apple’s smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay™ and Google’s Android Auto can be used. If a corresponding smartphone is connected by USB, the customer can, if desired, switch to the CarPlay™ or Android Auto interface.
Mobile phones can be charged as standard, wirelessly and without a telephone holder. Wireless charging works with all mobile devices (up to a screen diagonal of 15.2 cm) that support or can be retrofitted to support the Qi standard. The charging pad is integrated into the stowage compartment at the front of the centre console. In addition, Multifunction Telephony (optional feature) allows suitably designed mobile phones to be connected with the vehicle’s exterior aerial.
New driving assistance systems with extended functions
The S-Class Cabriolet is taking a further large step towards autonomous driving and are moving to the next level with new or functionally considerably extended Intelligent Drive driving assistance systems. For this purpose, for example, Active Distance Control DISTRONIC makes considerably greater use of map and navigation data than hitherto.
The S-Class Cabriolet is fitted as standard with the full-support AIRMATIC air suspension featuring infinitely variable damping control.

AMG S 63 Coupe
Panamericana radiator grille and front apron with new jet wing.
The new AMG S-Class Coupé is instantly identifiable from the front thanks to the AMG Panamericana radiator grille: The V-shaped cooling air intake harmoniously follows the lines of the headlamp housings and is subdivided by chromed, vertical struts. The front apron resembles a hovering jet wing and is painted in vehicle colour. It is flanked by two large outer air inlets, which are outlined in high-gloss black. The three-dimensional front splitter with its aerodynamically shaped high-sheen chrome edge reduces uplift at the front axle.
The side skirts with three-dimensional inlays in high-sheen chrome give the Coupé a lower-slung look and generate even more tension in the flanks.
The powerful rear end of the S 63 Coupe features an updated rear apron with diffuser insert and the redesigned, model-specific twin tailpipes of the AMG exhaust system.
New and exclusive additions to the Coupé are the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) rear lamps. OLEDs are characterised by their thin-film design, which allows curved surfaces to be created, resulting in totally new light designs. A total of 66 OLEDs (33 left and 33 right) produce an unmistakable light signature, which is combined with a Coming Home function.
Interior: beguiling appointments and design
The stylish character of the new S-Class models from Mercedes-AMG is also evident in the interior: All four models welcome their passengers with a special ambience. The AMG power sports seats with memory function and seat heating offer the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Nappa leather and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exclusive atmosphere on board. Special touches include the embossed emblem on the armrest of the front centre console and the analogue clock in exclusive IWC design, which features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and genuine metal appliqués on the face.
The three-spoke Performance steering wheel features paddle shifters, a distinctly contoured rim trimmed with perforated leather in the grip area, and a metal insert with AMG logotype. It is optionally available made of black nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre.
Another hallmark AMG speciality are the displays: The 31.2-centimetre TFT wide-screen colour display reproduces round dials that provide information about engine speed, vehicle speed and lots of additional data. The driver has a choice of three display designs, “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”. In addition, the AMG menu was expanded considerably. Among other things, it can display the engine and transmission oil temperature, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, engine output and torque, boost pressure, tyre temperatures and pressures as well as the current vehicle set-up.
4.0-litre V-8 biturbo engine with twin-scroll turbochargers
The AMG 4.0-litre V-8 Biturbo engine in the S 63 Coupé comes exclusively in the highest performance stage to date rated at 450 kW (612 hp). The peak torque of 900 Nm also represents a new maximum. It is available across a wide rev range between 2750 and 4500 rpm, and thereby provides a sense of superior poise. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes just 4.2 seconds, and the fulminating acceleration continues until the electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h is reached (with AMG Driver’s Package: 300 km/h).
The further advanced AMG 4.0-litre V-8 Biturbo engine utilises well-proven twin-turbo forced induction, with the two chargers not located outside on the cylinder banks, but rather between them in the V of the cylinders. The advantages of the “hot inside V” are a compact engine design, spontaneous response of the turbochargers and low exhaust emissions thanks to optimal airflow to the near-engine catalysts.
Two twin-scroll turbochargers provide even better fresh-mixture cylinder charge. The results are a higher output, more torque already at low engine speeds, and a very spontaneous throttle response.
‘AMG Cylinder Management’ cylinder deactivation system
maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the V8 engine in the S 63 Coupé with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which significantly lowers the fuel consumption.
When the driver has selected the “Comfort” transmission driving mode, the cylinder deactivation system is available in the wide engine speed range from 1000 to 3250 rpm. The AMG main menu on the instrument cluster informs the driver whether the cylinder deactivation system is in use and whether the engine is presently operating in the partial or full-load range. The transition from four to eight-cylinder operation is immediate, fast and imperceptible, so that the passengers do not experience any loss of comfort whatsoever.
Short shift times, high efficiency: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission
For the first time the S 63 Coupé has been fitted with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, which convinces with extremely short shift times, lightning reactions to shift paddle commands, a double-clutching function and fast multiple downshifts. A wet start-off clutch replaces the torque converter of the production model. This saves weight and improves the response to the driver’s accelerator pedal input, particularly during acceleration and load changes. It also allows the RACE START function.
Specially developed suspension for maximum lateral and longitudinal dynamics
The S 63 Coupé is equipped with AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive damping adjustment. Customers can pre-set the damping to “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus” from relaxed long-distance comfort to dynamic sportiness. Rebound and compression are set independently of each other, which optimises the adaptation to the driving status and the quality of the road. The freely programmable mapping furthermore allows a wide spread between minimum and maximum damper forces. The difference between the comfortable and sporty suspension setting is thus more refined and is subjectively even more perceptible – depending on the particular driving situation.
The specific front axle kinematics, including a higher wheel camber, bigger stabiliser bar and more rigid subframe mount at the rear axle are another new feature. These measures optimise the agility of the S 63 Coupé when a dynamic driving style is employed.
Direct and with clear feedback: the AMG speed-sensitive steering
The electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering in the new AMG S-Class models has a variable steering ratio. It stands out thanks to the AMG-specific rack-and-pinion ratio with its precise, highly authentic feedback. Power assist varies between the stages “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The relevant characteristics are automatically activated depending on the selected DYNAMIC SELECT driving mode or can be personalised in “Individual” mode. At low speeds, the driver only needs to provide minimal steering input. At high speeds, he or she is able to rely on solid straight-line stability. The clearly defined steering centre and the authentic feedback likewise contribute to the optimum steering feel.
Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG high-performance compound braking system
The large high-performance composite brake system decelerates the Performance Cabriolet and Coupé reliably and quickly and is fade-resistant even under high loads.
The new models are fitted with 390 x 36 mm composite brake discs with 6-piston aluminium fixed callipers at the front axle and 360 x 24 mm discs with single-piston floating brake callipers at the rear axle.
The AMG ceramic high-performance compound braking system is optionally available. The weight savings of more than 20 percent reduce un-sprung masses and increase driving dynamics, agility and ride quality. Furthermore, the ceramic brakes are distinguished by a longer service life, higher corrosion resistance and higher thermal stability. It features brake discs of size 420 x 40 mm at the front and of size 360 x 32 mm at the rear. It can be identified visually by the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” lettering on the specially painted brake callipers.
3-stage ESP® not only offers safety but driving pleasure too:
- ESP® ON: for a high level of safety by adaptation to the sporty character of the car
- ESP® Sport Handling Mode: allows wider yaw angles before system intervention for a sporty driving style
- ESP® OFF: system deactivated for a sporty driving style on closed circuits
For a personalised experience: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes.
The four different AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual” give drivers extensive influence over the new models’ characteristics. Each drive program modifies key parameters such as the response of engine, transmission, suspension, steering, ESP® and all-wheel drive in the S 63 Coupé.
The S 63 Coupé also features the “RACE” drive program.
Independently of the DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, the driver has the option of pressing the “M” button to switch directly to manual mode, in which gearshifts are executed exclusively using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. The suspension set-ups can also be selected if desired. The 3-stage ESP® and the exhaust gas flap can also be controlled using an AMG-specific button.
“Comfort” is the well-balanced drive program with a comfort-oriented suspension and steering set-up. It also offers a consumption-oriented powertrain configuration and early upshifts – with smooth gear changes and a discreet engine sound. Cylinder deactivation in the S 63 Coupé, the ECO start/stop function and Glide mode are active: when the driver releases the accelerator in a speed range between 60 and 160 km/h, the clutch of the MCT transmission opens and the engine is decoupled from the powertrain. The electronics lower the engine speed to idle and driving resistance is reduced by the compression and friction forces of the engine on overrun.
The DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes “Sport“ and “Sport+” are designed for high driving dynamics. This is provided by the agile accelerator pedal characteristics with direct set-up and the emotionally appealing gearshifts with shortened shift times and rev-matching function on downshifts.
The increased idle speed in “Sport+” furthermore makes particularly fast
start-offs and even better acceleration from standstill possible.
“RACE” is the program for highly dynamic driving on closed race circuits in which all the parameters are configured for maximum performance. The “Curve” drive program in the S 65 Coupé is active in a speed range between 15 km/h and 180 km/h. A curve inclination function is integrated in the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension. As a result, the vehicle tilts to the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees, similar to a motorcycle rider. This reduces the perceived lateral forces and increases the ride quality.
RACE START now even easier
The RACE START function is now also available in the S 63 Coupé. It features a new, significantly simpler control logic: In the “Sport” or “Sport+” driving modes, the driver only has to press hard on the brake pedal with their left foot while simultaneously mashing the accelerator pedal with their right foot. The on-board electronics will then set the optimum engine speed. Depending on the requirements or the road surface conditions, the engine speed can be increased or lowered in a certain range by operating the paddle shifters. If the driver now releases the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerates with optimal traction. The Coupé is then able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds.
Pure sound: the controllable AMG Performance exhaust system
The S 63 Coupé is fitted as standard with the controllable AMG Performance exhaust system to ensure an even more emotionally appealing sound experience. The infinitely adjustable flaps modulate the exhaust note authentically and directly. The flaps open or close dependent on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving mode but can also be controlled individually with a separate button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT on the centre console. In the “Comfort” and “Sport” modes, the low-frequency sound typical of a V-8 emphasises comfort. In “Sport+” it is of a much more emotionally appealing nature.
Systematic lightweight design: AMG Lightweight Performance
The stringent implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy also contributes to the high driving dynamics and low fuel consumption. The lightweight construction measures include the use of a lithium-ion starter battery, AMG forged light-alloy wheels and the weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite brake system.
