A decade into independence, Malaysia was just establishing its industrial debut on the world’s stage which included an automotive policy to accelerate national industrialisation through the local assembly of vehicles and manufacturing of automobile components. Volvo Car Manufacturing Malaysia (previously known as Swedish Motor Assemblies Sdn. Bhd.) were among the first to respond to the government’s worldwide call for technology transfer, local skill development and foreign investment.
They then became the first foreign carmaker to establish an automotive assembly plant in the country. Situated in the heartland of Shah Alam, it is one of Malaysia’s longest surviving car-making plants. Volvo’s assembly plant commenced operations in March 1967 with production of the Volvo 144 – the first car proudly assembled in Malaysia and a big step forward for the nation’s automotive industry. Considering the Shah Alam plant was also Volvo’s first outside of its home country of Sweden, this was a tremendous distinction for Malaysia.
Volvo has shared a long history with Malaysia, growing in tandem with the country’s development by introducing automotive innovations and providing more Malaysian drivers access to Swedish style and safety. The locally-assembled Volvo 144 was followed swiftly with many more models over the years, featuring Volvo’s landmark inventions such as the three-point seatbelt and the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) – safety features which are now standard on all modern cars today.
In 2016, Volvo Car Malaysia was the first luxury car brand to introduce a locally assembled plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) through the Volvo XC90 Recharge – an effort that supported the government’s ambition of transforming Malaysia into an ASEAN hub for Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs). At the time, Malaysia was the only country outside of Sweden to assemble the all-new Volvo XC90 Recharge. Later in 2021, Volvo Car Malaysia became the first automotive car maker in Malaysia to offer a complete lineup of plug-in hybrids.
In 2022, Volvo Car Malaysia marked another turning point for the Malaysian automotive industry, with the launch of the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, the country’s first locally assembled fully-electric car. Through the capabilities of its local assembly plant, Volvo further spurred the local electric vehicle scene to support the country’s Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP) in accelerating the adoption of EEVs. Subsequently, Malaysia also became Volvo’s hub to export its Pure Recharge models to the ASEAN region, building on its existing export network.
Volvo, born in Sweden but rooted in Malaysia for 57 years, continues its mission to give car owners the freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way. Since the announcement of its electrification agenda in 2022, which aims to offer only a fully-electric range by 2030 while becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040, Volvo is leading drivers’ transition towards electrification one step at a time.
For Volvo, the future is electric, and this vision is asserted towards making a better tomorrow for Malaysia. While it has ambitious plans to pivot fully towards electric cars, it also acknowledges that there are drivers who need time to adapt to an electric lifestyle. Every driver is different with diverse needs and daily commutes, and the anxiety of having sufficient electric range is still a significant barrier to electric vehicle ownership.
Volvo Car Malaysia has a complete line-up of PHEVs that are fitted with both electric and petrol powertrains to address this. With a hybrid powertrain, drivers can go fully electric in their daily commutes with up to 90km of range such as in the Volvo XC90 Recharge.
When battery power runs out such as during unexpected longer journeys, Volvo PHEVs can fall back on the cars’ hybrid “back-up plan” with the petrol engine working in tandem with regenerative charging for more efficient petrol consumption. Thus, PHEVs can reduce or even eliminate tailpipe emissions with every drive.
For drivers ready to make the immediate switch to pure electric driving, the Volvo XC40 and C40 Pure Recharge models are available today with up to 450km of range from a full charge, going from a standstill to 100kph in a brisk 4.7 seconds.
Volvo Car Malaysia is commemorating its 57 years with Malaysia with promotions for both its BEV and hybrid range during Merdeka and Malaysia Day.
From now until 30 September 2023, customers who purchase a new Volvo Recharge Pure Electric model (XC40 Recharge Pure Electric or C40 Recharge Pure Electric) with Volvo Car Financial Services will enjoy the benefits of instant final price reduction worth RM20,000 with additional savings via a principal reduction method. By bringing together the past and present, this exhibition on display commemorates Volvo’s 57 years of growing together with generations of Malaysians as it celebrates its 96th global anniversary this year.
Volvo’s Heritage in Malaysian History
Back in the 1960s, when our country was barely a decade into independence, Volvo was amongst the first automotive manufacturers to answer Malaysia’s call for foreign investment. This resulted in Volvo Cars setting up its first assembly plant in Shah Alam, which is still in operation today.
The Shah Alam plant was inaugurated in 1966, making it Malaysia’s first automotive assembly plant. It is also Volvo’s first assembly plant outside of Sweden.
A year later, the first Volvo 144 assembled in Malaysia rolled off the assembly line and was ready to hit the road.
Volvo and Safety Innovation
Safety, sustainability, and innovations are at the heart of what Volvo does. Since 1927, Volvo have been designing cars that put people first, and it is continuously improving safety for people and the environment.
Three-point safety Belt
Volvo invented the three-point safety belt in 1959 and waived the patent rights so everybody could benefit. To date, it’s estimated that over one million lives have been saved by the three-point safety belt.
First made-in-Malaysia Volvo
In 1967, the Volvo 144 became the first Volvo to be assembled at a plant outside of Sweden, and this huge milestone marked the time when Malaysian drivers benefited from greater accessibility to Swedish style and safety.
Enhanced safety with BLIS
A world-first in passenger cars, the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), which was introduced in 2003, is a breakthrough safety technology in the automotive world and now a common safety feature for passenger cars.
First locally-made EV in Malaysia
Volvo’s commitment to safety and the environment is stronger than ever. It is the first luxury brand to introduce locally assembled electric vehicles in Malaysia: plug-in hybrids from 2016, and fully-electric vehicles from 2022.
Volvo and Malaysia Today
Having been present in the nation and in the hearts of Malaysians since the 1960s, Volvo is committed to grow alongside Malaysia and embark on a continuous journey to uphold a long tradition of safety and sustainability.
Today, its local plant in Malaysia assembles thousands of cars annually while employing generations of local talent, making it possible for the nation and its people to reap benefits through various job and economic opportunities as well as technology transfers. The brand presence has also grown the nation through our wider ecosystem of dealerships, technicians, after-sales products and services, and related industries.
Malaysia is a regional export hub for the ASEAN region and serves markets such as Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. Volvo Car Malaysia are proud to be the first automotive brand to export all-electric vehicles from Malaysia to other markets.
As a car maker, Volvo is excited to empower Malaysia to embrace an electrified future by offering 100% of its new models as pure electric vehicles by 2030. Volvo has an ambitious goal to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.
Volvo as the Makers of Tomorrow
Since 2019, all new Volvo cars sold in Malaysia are either partially or completely battery powered. It is Volvo’s way of providing a sustainable mobility experience that is safer for people and the environment.
The future is electric and there’s a Volvo for everyone and every lifestyle. Volvo Car Malaysia offers multiple ways for Malaysians to take their first step towards electrification with its offering of pure electric vehicles and its complete line up of plug-in hybrids.

About Volvo’s Classic Cars on Display at Makers of Tomorrow
Volvo 144
On 17 August 1966, the Volvo 144 was presented to almost four hundred journalists at the Lorensberg function rooms in central Gothenburg, Sweden. It would then go on to become Volvo’s first million-seller with no fewer than 1.25 million cars produced in eight years, furthering Volvo’s position as an international player.
- The Volvo 144 was the first model assembled by the Volvo assembly plant in Malaysia in November 1967. The then Minister of Transport, Sardon Jubir, test-drove this first Malaysian-assembled Volvo the following month.
Volvo 122S
In 1956, a prototype of a new passenger car from Volvo was presented. This model was also known as the Amazon in Sweden and the 121 and 122S on the export market. The designation 122S was used for the version with a more powerful engine.
The styling was modern, and this model was the first car from Volvo with a pontoon body with a very high safety level with features such as a padded upper-half of the dashboard, a laminated windscreen and seatbelt attachments both front and rear.
- The Volvo 122 Amazon was the first Volvo car to arrive on Malaysian shores. In the early 1960s, four businessmen from Penang secured the distributorship rights from Volvo in Sweden.
- The name “Amazon” had been chosen because of its original meaning – mythical female warriors who were skilled and courageous.
- In 1959, the Volvo Amazon and the PV544 became the first cars in the world to feature three-point safety belts in the front seats – a Volvo invention now standard in all modern cars.
- In “All the President’s Men”, the movie about the Watergate affair that forced the resignation of Richard Nixon from his presidency, Robert Redford who played Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward drives a white Volvo 122S.
