BMW Motorrad Malaysia Introduces All-New “First Edition” Variants with the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental.

The New BMW R 18 Transcontinental First Edition

The New BMW R 18 Bagger First Edition

BMW Motorrad Malaysia recently announced the arrival of the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental – both exclusively in the “First Edition” guise, further expanding the local portfolio with new additions that are built for the long haul.

Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia said, “As we ride into the sunset of 2021, we are pleased to be able to close the year with the introduction of two new members to the BMW R 18 family of iconic cruisers. The New BMW R 18 Bagger and New BMW R 18 Transcontinental are the dream long-distance travel companions that are not just stunning to the eye, but are built for a comfortable and powerful ride on the road. As cross-country road trips are now possible, and made even better with the new cruisers – let us continue to Make Life a Ride in the New Normal, safely but surely. “

The New BMW R 18 Bagger and New BMW R 18 Transcontinental combine the unmistakable power of the “Big Boxer” with a classic chassis concept based on historical models, exclusive equipment and a stylish design. The New BMW R 18 Bagger is built to deliver pure emotional riding pleasure, giving the rider every opportunity for a Soul Fuel ride that is uniquely their own. On the other hand, the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental features various refined design elements and modern motorcycling technology which distinguish it as the ideal machine for travelling long-distances – solo or with a pillion and luggage.

Characteristic streamlining of the classic “Big Boxer”.

The New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental takes on a streamlined form, creating an elongated, teardrop-shaped silhouette. Echoing the early days of big cruisers built for touring, the overall look of the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental encompasses style-defining elements such as the rigid double-loop frame, open-running and gloss nickel-plated universal shaft and classic housing for the rear-axle gearbox, reminiscent of the legendary BMW “Big Boxers” of the past. Lockable fuel filler caps are also included. Arriving exclusively in the “First Edition” variants, the two models offer high-grade equipment extras that include high-quality chrome components. Other highlights include special surface finishes, a seat with high-quality embroidery and the inscription “First Edition” on the two cases.

From the front, the New BMW R 18 Bagger features a low fairing windshield and a short, narrow two-person seat. Complete with an elongated, dynamically elegant side-line and fly line sloping down towards the rear, the New BMW R 18 Bagger embodies the typical “bagger” style. A masculine touch is provided by the engine in metallic matt black, the black fork and fork sleeves, as well as chromed rear-view mirrors and black handlebar weights. The instrument cluster and rings are likewise finished in black.

Distinguishingly, the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental leads with a high fairing windshield, wind deflectors, as well as a stylish and harmoniously integrated top-case in body finish. Designed specifically for long rides, a high level of comfort is ensured for both rider and pillion passenger, which in combination with high-quality fittings, give an overall impression of distinct refinement. Finished in silver itself, the engine is supplemented by a silver fork with chrome-plated fork sleeves – a surface combination that lends a refined elegance to the cockpit, which itself comprises four chrome-plated instrument rings and an instrument cluster finished in silver. Other chrome-plated elements include rear-view mirrors and handlebar weights.

The “First Edition” variant furnishes the New BMW R 18 Bagger in contrast milled wheels in black, whereas the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental arrives with contrast milled wheels in silver grey, as well as chrome-plated brake callipers at the front. Other touches to both models include chrome clasps on cases with “First Edition” lettering, chrome-plated handlebar fittings, chrome-plated cylinder head covers and hero chest, chrome-plated intake trims, as well as white double lining on fuel tank, fairing and trunks and cases. Pinstriping is also applied to both models.

Enhanced with the Headlight Pro, both models feature a classical interpretation of the state-of-the-art LED lighting technology seen in the headlamps with daytime running lights. A strikingly designed LED main headlamp with optimised low beam and high beam is combined with newly designed LED turn indicators at the front. Rear function-integrated LED turn indicators with integrated rear light function mounted on the cases also ensure an unmistakable look. Exclusively available for the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental are two LED auxiliary headlights and multifunctional indicator lights.

For both the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental, the implementation of adaptive turning light with swivel module allows for even better illumination of the road when cornering. The module ensures the horizon of the light remains constant, harmoniously and seamlessly adapted to the respective banking angle, providing a particularly wide and homogeneous illumination of the road. In addition, this technology is also used to ensure the high beam maintains a constant range by adapting the headlamp according to the road and riding position of the motorcycle, even during dynamic riding.

The most powerful BMW boxer engine of all time with historical roots and full torque.

At the heart of the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental is the legendary air/oil cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine, termed the “Big Boxer”, which impresses both in appearance and performance. Packing 1802 cc, it is capable of an output of 67 kW (91 hp) at 4,750 rpm, with a maximum torque of 158 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Enormous pulling power, combined with generously sized flywheel mass, ensures an exemplary running smoothness.

Matching the impressive power, the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental achieve effective deceleration via a double disc brake at the front and a single disc brake at the rear in conjunction with four-piston fixed callipers. The brake system is equipped with the proven BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS, which adjusts the brake force distribution between the front and rear brakes during braking in accordance with the dynamic wheel load distribution and the load.

The Active Cruise Control (ACC) system, available as standard, makes relaxed gliding with distance control possible, which allows for adjustment of the speed to the vehicle in front without rider input. This is achieved through radar sensors integrated in the front fairing, with a detection range of 120 metres. For the demanding touring rider, this functionality means increased comfort and safety, as well as welcome relief during the long ride. Speed and distance to the vehicle in front can be set conveniently via a button, with the desired distance adjustable to three stages and desired speed adjustable between 30 and 160 km/h. Safe cornering is also ensured with the cornering control system of the ACC, which automatically decelerates, giving the rider the right speed for a comfortable and safe banking angle. Full control to the rider is ensured at all times, as the ACC can be overridden by the rider at any time.

As standard, the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental comes with “Rain”, “Roll” and “Rock” riding modes to meet individual riders’ needs. In addition to that, Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and engine drag torque control (MSR) provides an enhanced level of safety. Electronically controlled, the MSR prevents the rear wheel from slipping as a result of abrupt throttling or downshifting, even in wet conditions.

The ASC and MSR corresponds to the different ride modes. In “Rain” mode, throttle response is gentler and the control characteristics of ASC and MSR allow for a wet and therefore more slippery road surface to achieve a very high level of riding safety. In “Road” mode, the engine offers optimum throttle response, while ASC and MSR are set to achieve ideal performance on all roads. Finally, the “Rock” riding mode allows the rider to explore the full dynamic potential of the New BMW R 18 Bagger and New BMW R 18 Transcontinental, with a throttle response is very spontaneous and direct, as well as ASC allowing for a little more slip.

Also included as standard are reverse assist, activated via the selector lever, for convenient manoeuvring and Hill Start Control for easy hill starts. Reverse assist blocks the forward gear and engages the reverse gear, with the movement itself initiated by the rider via the starter motor button. The Hill Start Control system, which makes it particularly easy to start off on an incline, is activated by briefly operating the hand or foot brake lever.

Classically designed cockpit, new digital sound dimensions.

The cockpit has been specially designed for the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental, featuring four analogue round instruments and a 10.25-inch TFT colour display – harmoniously blending classical appearance and maximum functionality. Map navigation and connectivity comes together in a highly integrated operating concept – the navigation map to be displayed in the instrument cluster via a smartphone and the BMW Motorrad Connected App. Other highlights include the Keyless Ride functionality, as well as radio functionality – arriving as standard for both variants.

Listening pleasure is taken to new dimensions with the inclusion of Marshall Gold Series sound systems, visually distinguished by grey cover grilles of the speakers in combination with golden Marshall lettering. For the New BMW R 18 Bagger, the Marshall Gold Series Stage 1 is equipped, comprising a system of four speakers plus a booster. Two Marshall 2-way loudspeakers with 25 watts of output each are integrated into the front fairing, complemented by a 90-watt subwoofer in the front upper section of the cases. The booster has an output of 180 watts.

On the other hand, the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental comes equipped with the Marshall Gold Series Stage 2, comprising a system of six loudspeakers and a booster. Two Marshall 2-way loudspeakers with 25 watts of output each are integrated in the front of the fairing, each complemented by a 9- watt subwoofer in the upper front area of the cases. In addition, there is a 2-way loudspeaker with 25 watts of output in the front side section of the top case backrest. The booster also puts out 180 watts.

Financial Services.

With the Financing Plan from BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia, ownership of the New BMW R 18 Bagger and the New BMW R 18 Transcontinental start from RM2,270.00 and RM2,420.00 per month, respectively. This is based on balloon financing estimates of an 80% loan on a 4-year tenure. Owners can also enjoy additional benefits with the All-New Industry-Leading Premium Engine Oil Inclusive, Service Inclusive and Warranty Extension Programmes by BMW Motorrad Malaysia.
