Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has unveiled its fifth-generation executive sedan, the W206 Mercedes C-Class, to the Malaysian market a year after its world debut.
Touted as the ‘baby S-Class’, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced two variants of the executive sedan namely the C200 Avantgarde and the C300 AMG Line.
Kicking things off with the exterior, the looks of the car took a departure from the previous W205 C-Class with a more aggressive looking design language. Featured on both trims are the LED High Performance Headlights. This being a plus to the C200 as the previous generation W205 only featured the LED High Performance Headlights on the C300 AMG Line.
The front fascia of the car is also differentiated between the two variants with a vertical louvre grill for the C200, three-pointed star pattern diamond grille on the C300. The differentiation of the two trims also continues on the wheels where The C200 rides on 18 inch 5-spoke wheels and the C300 AMG on 19 inch multi-spoke rims.
The W206’s is also 65mm longer compared to the previous model at 4751mm length with a wheelbase of 2865mm. It also gets wider and lower compared to the W205 with an increased width of 10mm and 9mm shorter.
In terms of colours, the C-Class comes in eight variants, which are Spectral Blue, Polar White, High-tech Silver, Obsidian Black, Graphite Grey, Selenite Grey, Cavansite Blue and Hyacinth Red.
Under the hood, the W206 also packs the newer M254 engine with the C200 having the 1.5 litre displacement and the C300 with the 2.0 litre displacement. The engine carries an upgrade kicking out the old version belt-driven starter generator and ushering a new integrated starter generator, placed between the gearbox and the engine.
Going into the engine specifications of each of the variants, the C200 Avantgarde’s 1.5 litre engine can churn out 204 horsepower with 300nm of torque. Its performance clocks in at 246 km/h top speed with a 0-100 time of 7.3 seconds.
Meanwhile, the C300 AMG Line having the beefier 2.0 litre engine can dish out 255 horsepower with a bumped up torque of 400nm compared to the previous version, the W205 C300 AMG Line. It carries a top speed of 250 km/h top speed and a 0-100 speed of 6 seconds.
Both the variants’ engines are mated with the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission found on the previous generation W205 C-Class.
Moving on to the interior, the W206 C-Class sports a more refreshed look compared to its predecessor with squarish air conditioner vents, two large digital displays; one for the instrument panel and another media display on the centre console.
The latter display, with its portrait orientation, akin to the display screens on Tesla cars, boasts the proprietary Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Between the two variants, its seats also differ with the C200 having the seats tailored for comfort and the C300 having a sportier bucket-style seats. The difference continues to the steering wheel where the C200 is fitted with a wrapped leather wheel while the C300 has a flat-bottomed steering wheel furnished in Nappa leather.
Both the C200 Avantgarde and C300 AMG Line are Completely Built Units (CBU) and come with an on-the-road without insurance price tag of RM288,334 for the C200 and RM330,681 for the C300.
