After much anticipation, I finally get to have a crack at the 2021 Suzuki GSX-R1000R, now available in Malaysia and at the nearest dealer near you.
Being a previous Gixxer owner myself (GSXR 1000 K5) and having the opportunity to ride various other GSXR models throughout my riding years I have to say I am stoked having this opportunity to try out the 2021 model.
The change is revolutionary. The overall outlook of the GSX-R1000R, in particular this model that I reviewed came with the 100th Anniversary Edition livery which gave the bike a mean look and complimenting that with an equally mean grunt through its standard pipe.
First thing that caught my eyes was the 825 mm height of the seat. It has been designed narrower as compared to its predecessor. A quick glance over the entire bike and you will notice that the new GSX-R 1000R is build smaller and sleeker, like the shape of a tear drop.
A set of Four-piston Brembo Monoblock brake callipers matched with a new, larger 320mm Brembo brake discs stop this Suzy Gixxer efficiently and effectively. Brake lever feel is great too, giving the rider the ability to sensitively sense just how much pressure is needed to bring this bad boy to a stop or to regulate the brake while in corner (Trail braking).
The LCD instrument panel has a crystal-clear display and good user interface in navigating the menu. A great UX indeed. Everything is straight forward, choose your ride mode, twist of the throttle, and let the seamless quick shifter do the rest. Our only job is to keep our eyes and ears open on the road.
The power plant of this GSX-R 1000R is a 999.8cc inline four mated with Suzuki innovative SR-VVT (Suzuki Racing-Variable Valve Timing System). The VVT engages at 10,000 rpm as the centrifugal force starts to rotate the cam sprocket in the camshaft while retarding the intake cam timing, giving the bike an extra kick churning out a claimed 202hp
The SDMS (Suzuki Drive mode Selector) gives the rider the option to select three different mapping and engine power delivery settings. It is designed to match the different riding ambient, such as racetrack, tight and twisty roads, or city riding. This can be done while in motion, but the throttle needs to be shut off.
The GSX-R 1000R is remarkably easy to handle and power delivery is smooth. This GSX-R has indeed gone through a lot of physical and technological advancement since the 2005 GSXR model which I once owed.
Suzuki Malaysia Sdn Bhd (AFY) have fantastic plans for the motorcycle community in Malaysia. Do brace for the storm that is coming with more new models arriving at the Malaysian shores.
