Switching to EV cars you guys and you will have to get into the habit of charging your car like your hand-phones.
First thing is you need is to make sure your home is equipped with the right wall box charging unit besides the conventional 3-pin wall socket. Second thing is get to know where all charging points are located for a smoother, uninterrupted run.
The Volvo XC40 comes with a 78-kWh battery as standard, giving you a projected range of 450km on a full charge. But please bear in mind our driving style plays a big difference. I managed to get 400km with the occasional pedal to metal moments and why, let me tell you. The XC40 comes with P8 AWD which in lay man’s term is one electric motor per axle. Total output is 300 kW or 408 PS / 660 Nm. A pocket rocket is all I can say, and to help put all that power down on earth, a set of Pirelli P Zero 235/50 R19 (front) and 255/45 R19 (rear) ensures that the this pocket rocket does not takes off the ground. Just like a remote-control car, no gears / transmission, instant power all the way up.
Power is sufficient for daily commute to work. As a benchmark, I used roughly 30% of power for a 120-km trip from P.J to Sepang Circuit and back, which I feel is not bad for a 2.1 tonne SUV.
The projected range is very accurate with the help of Google Maps navigation system which has been incorporated in the XC40 to gauge battery percentage based on your journey. This helped me by planning my charging stops if ever the need arises.
Based on my observation while on one of my charging stops, I noticed that from a low of 8% balance battery to a 80% charge, it took me about 60 minutes (DC1 CCS2). But if you are going to charge it with your home 3-pin wall socket it might take up to 40 to 72 hours to reach 100 %. When I charge with the CCS2, charging starts at 60kW until 80%, after which it progressively slows down until 4kW till it reaches 100%.
The selling price for this Volvo XC40 is RM262,460 (inclusive of the sales and services tax exemption)
